The Impact of Online Education on the Traditional University Experience

In recent years, online education has grown in popularity as a viable alternative to traditional on-campus education.

According to a report by the Babson Survey Group (now known as Bay View Analytics) and the University Professional and Continuing Education Association, there has been a steady increase in the number of students enrolled in online education programs in recent years.

In 2020, over 6.9 million students took at least one online course, this represents a significant increase from just over 1 million students in 2000. Online enrollment has grown at an average rate of 5.3% per year over the past decade, while enrollment in traditional brick-and-mortar institutions has grown at an average rate of 1.2% per year.

Additionally, the report also indicates that the majority of higher education institutions now offer online programs. In 2020, 95% of higher education institutions offered at least one online program, up from just 10% in 2002.

The report also shows that online education is most popular among older students, with the majority of online students being over the age of 25. Additionally, online students are more likely to be female and to have a lower income than traditional on-campus students.

Online education can also be isolating, with students feeling disconnected from the university community.

Despite these drawbacks, online education is here to stay. With the continued growth in technology, it is likely that more and more universities will offer online programs, and students will continue to take advantage of the benefits it provides.
